Déjà vu- I had a shower chair years ago that the seat cracked on. We added
padding and duct tape to it (and at the time I had a dry crack of skin on my
butt,) not a good idea, the rigged up seat held moisture and bacteria, it led
to an infection that eventually turned into osteomyelitis.

Now I have a Guardian shower/commode chair. The seat that came with the chair
(about six years ago) had a wood base and it was wider than the padding, so
eventually I would bottom out onto the wood base. I took my seat to a local
upholstery place and they added more padding and recovered it so I wouldn't
bottom out to the wood base. However- it wasn't the best for my skin because my
skin would get red (the redness would go away,) but over the years it has left
me with leathery like patches. The re-fabricated seat finally gave out about
five months ago and I had a new cushion made. The old seat was totally shot- so
they made a new one. The new seat hasn't been working very good, it has high
and low spots, so I do not sit straight on the chair. I too am looking to find
a new seat for my shower/commode chair. I believe Sunrise makes Guardian? I
hope they have revamped the original seat that came with my chair.

Subject: [QUAD-L] shower commode seat

I hope this isn't a repeat of someone else's question.
I have a shower/commode chair that used to have a very soft cushy seat. The
problem with that one was that the lining would crack and expose the wood
underneath. Now Invacare has discontinued that replacement seat with one that
is harder. It is too firm, but made so that the cracking problem does not
occur, I suppose.

Have you guys come across this, and how do you deal with a compromise? I have
been duct taping a thick piece of foam, cut in the shape of the seat. Still
not as perfect as I would like it to be. I think it is still a little too
firm. Plus, I have get someone else to do the duct taping which encourages my
tendancy toward procrastination.
