I have always wondered the same thing. My mom tries to clean them with pipe
cleaners, but it really doesn't help much. I thought maybe it was because I
drink diet caffeine free pop and decaf tea and water.
It is so gross and sometimes it gives you a big piece of black gob in your
mouth.. I just have to order new straws quite often.
I thought maybe it was caused from sugar substitute.

I had a few long drinking straws--about 2 feet or so long, I used to use
fairly often but they got yucky black mold inside of them,,,, Have any of you
had that problem??? perhaps constant use or cleaning may prevent the mold

thin wire to the tubing which makes it easy to bend straight to my mouth so I
can drink all thru the night. I drink quite a bit of water during the evening &
night.
