Subject: [QUAD-L] HELP! Wheelchair broke 11 months ago

Does anyone know who I can contact to get Oklahoma Dept. of Human Services
(ODHS) to get my old Medically Necessary standing wheelchair replaced.
Originally that standing w/c was bought by Dept. of Vocational Rehab. (DVR) in
1997. In 2004 I took DVR to a fair hearing to get this w/c replaced. I had to
represent myself which took forever to prepare for. Relying on others for
volunteer help getting prepared and to my amazement won that Hearing. Much to
my disappointment DVR appealed that decision and it was overturned against me
by the Director of Human Services. Based on false information which I could
prove.
Unfortunately a well known attorney approached me offering his
services pro-bono to help me meet the deadlines. He took my information and
then let the time run out before dumping me. And DVR then dropped me from their
program stating I was uncooperative. At that time my Advantage Program case
manager said they would get the new Medically Necessary standing wheelchair
since I didn't have any other pay source. Now 3 years later and countless
promises made by my case manager that a new w/c was ordered, have fallen
through. But I have received nothing but one excuse after another. I am being
discriminated against due to my disability. I am ignorant about where to go for
help. The agencies in Oklahoma that are supposed to help have not done so. I
now realize how ignorant I am letting that attorney take that documentation
concerning the appeal. But I have been on pain med's over 7 years which really
impaired my judgement and I really screwed up.
I am currently living in a home in my most integrated setting. Not
having a dependable wheelchair to use daily is making living here increasingly
difficult. Any advice on how to climb out of this hole would be much
appreciated. Glory to GOD & Sincerely, Jim Rice
