And the winner of the Climate
Virtual Town Hall is...
Last week, we held the
first-ever forum with
presidential candidates devoted
entirely to the climate crisis.
Here are how members ranked the
candidates' plans: (remember,
this does not imply a MoveOn
endorsement):

Sen. John Edwards--33.10%
Rep. Dennis Kucinich--15.73%
Sen. Hillary Clinton--15.71%
Sen. Barack Obama--15.03%
Gov. Bill Richardson--12.60%
Sen. Joe Biden--3.06%
Sen. Chris Dodd--3.01%
Sen. Mike Gravel--1.78%

Dear MoveOn member,

What would a third Bush term look like? Endless war in Iraq, continued
torture and spying, more ultra-conservative judges, more and more people
without health care, and so on ... it'd be awful.

But that's impossible, right? Well, maybe not. Every Republican candidate
for president is trying to distinguish himself from Bush, but the major
candidates would carry forward Bush's core agenda:

  * President Giuliani would support a second escalation of the war in
    Iraq.1
  * President Romney would double the size of the Guantanamo Bay prison.2
  * President McCain would bomb, bomb, bomb Iran.3
  * President Fred Thompson would have offered Scooter Libby a full
    pardon.4

We can make sure the Bush era ends in 2008. But it means starting now, not
next year: building strength in key neighborhoods, creating cutting-edge
tools for volunteers, and designing the most sophisticated voter turnout
effort progressives have ever run.

We need to start ASAP, but we can only afford it if 1,500 folks sign up to
contribute monthly between now and 2008. Can you chip in $15 a month to
make sure we put a progressive in the White House? It's easy--we bill your
credit card each month, and you can cancel any time. Click here:

The earliest we would hold a vote to endorse a candidate is the fall. So,
why start now? Right now, most people are thinking about who's going to
win the primary, but if we wait until there's a nominee before we start
planning for the general election, it will be too late. Starting early
will give us a critical leg up by allowing us to:

  * Advance progressive issues in the presidential primaries;
  * Train volunteers to counter the Republicans' messages through local
    media;
  * Find neighborhood leaders to form the backbone of a massive voter
    turnout effort;
  * Create new high-tech tools to connect volunteers directly with swing
    voters and people who might not vote without a reminder;
  * Show targeted TV advertisements in swing districts;
  * Run the most sophisticated progressive voter turnout and persuasion
    program ever.

Here's the thing: If we're going to make ambitious plans to win, we need
to know we'll have the funds to make them happen. Your monthly
contribution of $15 (you can cancel easily whenever you choose), along
with matching donations from 2,500 other MoveOn members, will create a
strong foundation for Victory 2008. Please donate now:
