W,
I've always considered my gas tank on my full size ford directly in the back
where the spare tire should be extremely scary & now I see my Chrysler is
back there too. Are they made from a stronger steel than a regular gas tank or
does it make no difference...they just have to move it? Curious.

The full tanks began in the rear of the van but to meet the federal
standards for crash testing they moved the tank or tanks to midsize. Then
when the
floors were lowered they could not use the same tanks and went with racing
bladder cells. Ford also required the tow bar package to protect the tank.
Fuel Cells meet NHTSA standards.
