State Budget Cutters:
Don't Limit Home Aides
To the editor:
Out of all the state budget cuts suggested by Diana Fortuna,
president of the Citizens Budget Commission ("An Easy Trim" Op-Ed, Dec. 16),
the unkindest one was to limit the hours of home attendant service.
Many people with home attendants depend on them so they can continue
to live in the community. Lowering the hours covered by Medicaid would mean
cutting back on their quality of life. They would risk slipping back into
institutional care, poverty and neglect.
What is needed is financing to help people move from nursing home care
to living in the community. This would actually both save money and promote
the humanitarian needs of elderly people and people with disabilities. A
bill before
Congress, the Community Choice Act is a better idea
