I don't think that's their purpose. Why do we have to have a passport to visit Canada? It wasn't Canada that required this it was us. Why? You now as well as I that photo IDs (ask any college student) as well as passports can and are forged all the time. Our government is not talking about illegal immigrants but about terrorists'.
I live in the northeast and have made several trips to Canada. It felt great to cross the border with no hassle or having to produce 'papers'. This is just another ploy by are government to distract us into believing that this will make us safe from terrorists.
