In the beginning of aftermarket door operators, there were trials and  error. 
 Usually at the expense of the innocent owner who didn't know any  
difference.  Often the pulley did not line up properly and caused unusual  wear 
and 
tear.  Most of the time it was the 3/32 AC Stainless Steel  cable.  When they 
snapped or frayed anything could happen and in your  case...... it did.

I have an '01 Dodge - my door opener is  after market.  When mine 'fell 
apart' I had the wire replaced, two idler  pulleys, and a roller in the door.  
AArou7nd 450$ as I remember.  He  said they 'fall apart' every couple years 
down 
here in AZ,  more often up  north in the snow.  Great stuff,  huh?
