I meany laying down in bed on his side.  That's how I do it now because I can't
transfer onto the chair naked.  I can't transfer without clothes so am on my
own as far as bowel program and bathing goes.  I put a pan of water on my
sliding board on my lap and wash up.  I take it back to the sink the same way.
I use blue pads for my bowel program.  I lay on my side and when I am finished,
I roll the pad up and tuck it the best and cleanest way I can.  I then roll
another blue pad and tuck that one under the pad I tucked under me.  Mind you,
I am on my side this whole time.  I then roll to the other side carefully
without twisting my back too much bc of the rods.  I finish rolling up the
soiled pad and throw it away and use baby wipes to clean the other side then
finishing with rinseless body wash.  It can be done.
When I was in rehab I was told by my occupational therapist another para did it
that way.  Like I said earlier that I practiced cleaning myself up while I was
in rehab so if I made a mess I could have help cleaning it up.  7 years  later,
I'm a pro.  Dont get me wrong, I do have bad days sometimes.  I've had
diarrahea and each time I turned, i would go again.  I'd have to keep up
rolling up blue pads and tucking it under the one I rolled up until I stopped
going.  When I was on the Zyvox, I went a lot and had to keep up with that and
it's a pain but worth it for the independence.
When I came home from rehab, I was pretty heavy but still managed.  When I used
the shower chair, I reached between my legs because I wasnt able to lean to one
side.  I used a 3 in one chair.  I have a tub, not a roll in shower.  The bench
hangs over the side of the tub, it has a cut out with a bucket.  I would go to
the bathroom, take out the bucket and then shower.  When I was all through, I
managed to clean out the bucket.
It can be done, it just takes practice.  I hope your friend manages in his
situation better.  I wouldn't want to be in his situation thats for sure.
