Being a quad, our veins disappear so therefore when we need strong antibiotics it is great to have a port. It's a small little disk that the Dr puts in surgically. Like the guys said it has to be accessed, & heparinized once a month, also is a place to do blood draws. I have had one since 1998 too. With a picline it is temporary & comes out after treatment.
