I don't like it when people lean on or hang onto my wheelchair like it's a
piece of furniture there for their convenience while standing and waiting
with me for whatever reason. I consider it a violation of my personal space,
not in a major way, just an annoyance. All that stated, I actually don't
mind it if it's my girlfriend or someone else endearing doing it.

Yes! I also find that most people want to stand off to the side, which
hurts my neck even more. And when i turn my chair to try to face them
straight-on, they will adjust by moving to the side again.

I do so appreciate people who squat or sit to talk.

One thing that really bothers me is when a person will stand up right next

down to my level to have a conversation.

Given the discussion around handicapped parking spaces, I thought you might
be interested in a survey we're running now at the Christopher & Dana Reeve
Foundation on the most annoying things people do to people in wheelchairs.
It started with a discussion in our online community this winter about snow
being shoveled into handicapped parking spaces. Then others chimed in with
their pet peeves. You can add your vote at

If you'd like to send this to others in wheelchairs to have them put in
their $0.02, you can do that at

Thanks for sharing,
