I have used flat free tires on two different Invacare Storm, Rear Wheel Drive Wheelchairs for over 15 years. During evaluation for both chairs I could not tell any noticeable ride difference between the flat free tires and the tires with air. Something like that usually happens when you're in a hurry to get someplace or already late for something.
If I have flat tires that makes one more thing I have to depend on someone else to do and don't we all want to be more independant. During my last Wheelchair evaluation I thought the mid Wheel drive Wheelchairs had a much rougher ride than the Rear or Front Wheel drive Wheelchairs. Plus I heard from many mid wheel drive wheelchair users that if you wanted to go on the grass, dirt or gravel you didn't want a mid Wheel drive Wheelchair. If you have a lockdown for driving it makes them even worse they said. I was told Invacare was even switching some mid Wheel drive to Rear Wheel drive for several people because of problems with ground Clearance they had after getting home with the mid Wheel drive Wheelchairs. I can see in some cases where mid/front Wheel drive would be better but in my house and van the Rear wheel drive works better and the others don't work very good. I know because I have tried both.
