I have taken Propantheline for sweating for 44 years and Ditropan for bladder spasticity until I had my urinary diversion in 1987. This is what I heard through the years, although not in as much detail. Quotes from Wikipedia, the 1st source that came up in my search. 1. Propantheline bromide (_INN_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Nonproprietary_Name) ) is an _antimuscarinic_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antimuscarinic) agent used for the treatment of excessive sweating (_hyperhidrosis_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperhidrosis) ), cramps or spasms of the stomach, intestines (gut) or bladder, and involuntary urination (_enuresis_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enuresis) ). It can also be used to control the symptoms of _irritable bowel syndrome_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irritable_bowel_syndrome) and similar conditions. This agent can also be used for patients who experience intense GI symptoms while tapering off of _TCAs_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tricyclic_antidepressant) . _[1]_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propantheline_bromide#cite_note-1) Contents [_hide_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propantheline_bromide#) ] * _1 Indications_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propantheline_bromide#Indications) * _2 Adverse effects_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propantheline_bromide#Adverse_effects) * _3 Mechanism of action_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propantheline_bromide#Mechanism_of_action) * _4 References_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propantheline_bromide#References) [_edit_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Propantheline_bromide&action=edit§ion=1) ]Indications By relaxing the gut muscle, propantheline can relieve pain in conditions caused by _spasm_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spasm) of the muscle in the gut. Relaxing the smooth muscle in the _bladder_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urinary_bladder) prevents the involuntary spasms that can allow leakage of _urine_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urine) from the bladder in the condition known as _enuresis_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enuresis) (involuntary urination in adults). Propantheline can also be used to treat excessive _sweating_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweating) because acetylcholine block also reduces secretions such as sweat and _tears_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tears) . 2. Oxybutynin (Ditropan, Lyrinel XL, Lenditro (South Africa)) is an _anticholinergic_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anticholinergic) medication used to relieve urinary and bladder difficulties, including frequent urination and inability to control urination (_urge incontinence_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urinary_incontinence#Urge_incontinence) ), by decreasing muscle spasms of the bladder._[2]_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxybutynin#cite_note-2) It _competitively_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Competitive_antagonist) _antagonizes_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Receptor_antagonist) the _M1_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muscarinic_acetylcholine_receptor_M1) , _M2_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muscarinic_acetylcholine_receptor_M2) , and _M3_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muscarinic_acetylcholine_receptor_M3) subtypes of the _muscarinic acetylcholine receptor_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muscarinic_acetylcholine_receptor) . It also has direct _spasmolytic_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muscle_relaxant#Spasmolytics) effects on bladder smooth muscle as a_calcium antagonist_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voltage-gated_calcium_channel) and local anesthetic, but at concentrations far above those used clinically. It is available orally in generic formulation or as the brand-names Ditropan, Lyrinel XL, or Ditrospam, as a transdermal patch under the brand name Oxytrol, and as a topical gel under the brand name Gelnique. Oxybutynin is also a possible treatment of _hyperhidrosis_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperhidrosis) (hyper-active sweating). ____________________________________ From: Lori Taylor <[email protected]> To: Larry Willis <[email protected]>; [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, December 19, 2012 12:19 PM Subject: Re: Fwd: [QUAD-L] Propantheline Here's my 2 cents on the comparison...... Ditropan and propantheline are created for the same purpose...to tighten the sphincter muscle to eliminate urine leakage. I take ditropan/oxybutynin 5mg 2x/day. But, I view propantheline as a 'pain pill for quads' b/c when we have pain we sweat and this drug stops it. Or at least, minimizes it. I was introduced to it by another quad around 20 years ago and was amazed at the difference it made in my daily living. When it was thought that they stopped making it, I panicked. So, since a few years back, I've stock-piled it and refill every chance I can. All I know is, that it works for me, my doc understands, and it helps me from taking a bunch of addictive, mind-altering pain meds. Hope this helps... This is the first time I have heard of it. I've been taking ditropan (oxybutynin) for sweating. Does anyone know how the two compare? Is one better than the other? I need some serious enlightenment, guys. I am completely lost with out my propantheline. I hope they never stop making them or all of us are going to have to do battle with the drug co.....ha ha! I know it works real well for me too. I'm not a doctor, but have been a quad for over 34 years. So, I feel the need to give you a bit of caution... Sweating and rapid heart rate--heart beating hard are a quad's '6th sense'...pain sensory and is a part of dysreflexia... I cut my 15mg propantheline in half. That way, I can see if I can stop the sweating w/out my mouth drying out too bad and w/out my heart beating too hard. If I feel ok, but am still sweating after a bit, I take the other half. Please be careful b/c what you're dsaying about your heart beat could be a recipe for disaster. I'm only saying this b/c I know that feeling. Please consiider 1/2 a pill. ____________________________________ From: greg <[email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) > To: [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) Sent: Tue, December 18, 2012 1:31:49 PM Subject: [QUAD-L] Propantheline I sweat so bad during my b-program, it is very uncomfortable. I mean buckets. A few people here mentioned Propantheline. I tried it and it worked great. I took 15mg. The only issues I had was dry mouth for a few hours and my heart beat hard for just a bit. I really hope it continues to work well, it is so much better. I just pop one before I start. Thanks everyone for the tip. Greg
