You guys remember the rock group Three Dog Night from late 60's, early 70's? 
Supposedly that name came from the Australian outback. If it was a particularly 
cold night, a camper would need 3 of his dogs to help keep him warm -- one on 
each side and one at his feet. Thus, a cold night was a three dog night. Might 
be a bunch of baloney, but makes a neat story.
