I can see this offending some people, but frankly I laughed my butt off. He drives the chair with his hand. DJ mentioned in the interview that he can move a couple of fingers and his arms somewhat. They never did say what caused his illness. I don't think the writer is very worried about a back story right now. :-)
I agree with your analysis of the show. Like Philadelphia and it will probably end up starting to suck a little after the first season.
