Facebook, texting, phone, Skype, Google talk. There are instant messaging clients like pidgin, Trillian, aol instant messenger, yahoo messenger, msn "windows live", jabber, icq, etc. There are chat rooms such as Voodoo Chat and VPChat but the communities have a good amount of immaturity. VPChat I believe costs money as well .
