Our progressive champ isn't alone—more than 150,000 MoveOn members have rejected Beltway conventional wisdom and backed the Senate and House plans for increasing Social Security benefits, not cutting them. 2 That's why Frank Burton, a MoveOn member in California, started a petition asking Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Sen. Barbara Boxer to support expanding Social Security benefits. The more support this legislation gathers, the stronger Democrats will be going into next month's budget fight. The petition says: Senators Boxer and Feinstein: Co-sponsor the Strengthening Social Security Act of 2013, which will make ALL wages subject to contributing to the Social Security Trust Funds and tie Social Security's cost-of-living increases to the REAL cost of living for retired Americans. Sign the petition to Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Sen. Barbara Boxer With the next budget showdown coming up in less than a month, politicians and pundits in Washington are debating a deal that could cut Social Security benefits. The Strengthening Social Security Act of 2013 rejects this notion. It would scrap the cap on payroll taxes, put $70 more into seniors' pockets each month, and increase that amount over time to account for the rising costs of seniors' everyday expenses, like health-related costs. 3 If every Democratic senator signs on to this legislation, then Republicans and the media will have to take notice, and we'll greatly reduce the chance that Social Security benefits get cut next month.
