Dumpster diving, eh? Unless this is a new pastime for you, you should know
that not everything one gets out of dumpsters works! (but, it's amazing how
much of it does)

I think a Syquest that can't recognize cartridges as unlocked is probably
bad; I've had a couple like that, and gave up on them after spending too
much time trying to get them to work.
But, cartridges can be bad, and will often lock up the machine...and, a bad
cartridge can be very inconsistent, leading one to suspect the
drive...although, a drive that was tossed in a dumpster could have had quite
a whack, and be out of alignment.
Be sure you've updated the drivers on the cartridges, and you're using the
latest version of Silverlining for your OS.
