Odds are pretty good that a 20" monitor uses - or at least CAN use - one of the
following resolution/refresh combos:

1024x768 @ 60 or 75 Hz
1152x870 @ whatever the Mac standard is, probably 60-some Hz
1152x882 (weird Radius/SuperMac thing)
1152x890 (or something close to that; see above)

Find the docs for your adapter and try the above resolutions out in that order.
