When you insert a disk, you have to push it just to the face of the bezel and then the drive grabs the disk makes a "CHUNK" sound as it takes the disk the rest of the way.
The newer (??) manual insert drives have a "thumb hole" in the disk slot. With these drive you have to push the disk deeper into the slot before the drive "accepts" the disk. The drives (at least all the 1.44 mb ones) work the same (functionally) but can't really be interchanged because of physical differences. If you try to switch them around you will most likely run into interference problems with the front bezel and slots.
