I'm not an electronics expert, but:

My feeling is that you run the risk of damaging the output circutry of
the machine by driving it on its' output lines.  The risk of damaging
your equipment is greater than you would risk by wearing out the port
(which can easily be replaced).

I also suspect that you will still get ghosting with the Y-cable, even
if it does work.  As there's no proper termination on your 'inactive'
end, there will be some reflection of the signal back up the wire.

Do you know if the impedance of all your cables is the same?  If not,
try making them all identical lengths and of identical impedance.

I'd suggest that you buy a switch with electronics to compensate for
intereference (I know they are more expensive, but they are a lot
cheaper than they used to be).  It's probably more worth it in the
long run.
