I have a performa 475 that I have been prodding for some
time. For years it was solid as a rock. Then I left it alone and
couldn't start it. I finally discovered it was the battery. I got
it going, reformatted the drive, put 7.6.1 on it and did all sorts of
things and it was great for several weeks. One day it would not
start. It would chime but not recognize any disks--including the
floppy or an external SCSI--and I would just get a blue screen of
death--not even a mac with a "?". I tried everything including:
testing the battery voltage through rebooting, booting with various
combinations of startup disks, reseating the RAM, turning it on and
off and on quickly. Nothing worked. I left it unplugged and
batteryless for several weeks. As I was ready to throw it out, I
decided to try one last time. I put in the battery, plugged it in,
attached an Apple keyboard, and turned it on holding down CmdOptPR.
Low and Behold it chimed, and rechimed and rebooted! I continued to
hold COPR keys down but it continued the boot and the screed came up
saying that the machine was improperly shut down. It turns out the
keyboard is now dead. I try other keyboards. I try restarting. It
restarts several times (always with the warning because I have to
shut it down with the power switch). So I couldn't get any keyboard
to work with it. A day or two later, and now it won't reboot at all.
All I get is the blue screen of death--not even looking for a drive
So I'm typing this three weeks later, and because of its
sentimental value I just went out and put the battery back, (it was
plugged in) attached a keyboard, plugged in the internal drive and
the whole thing works fine now.
Does anyone have a clue as to what is going on? I have
heard that the power-up chips on this machine can get flakey--but
I've never heard of losing the keyboard.
Is there anything I should do to improve the reliability, or
is this thing ready to part out?
