the computers have their pluses and minuses and thats not what really needs to be argued here. For this science project, if he is asking on the quad list for macs, it would only be fair to use pc's of either the same age or the same price range (whichever would appear fit, but I think age would be more fair as price of old macs at thrift stores seems to be a bit lower than the same aged PC). If it is only done with old computers, you could provide a simple useability test and I think the mac would win. I have a q610 and it certainly does modern things faster than my 486 laptop that is newer
I'd agree with you, except what science fair judges really want is hard-core, mathematical explanations as to why the computer is really faster. Sure he could do a simple "useability test" but that might sound too much like an opinionated result. Maybe yes, maybe no. Just speaking from experience because I, too, did that same science fair project in 6th grade last year. And the program I made can run on anything from a Macintosh II to a G5, and on windows will run on a 486 running Windows 95. The output of the program is in calculations per second on Floating-Point calculations and Integer calculations. Here is a log:
Computer Name: mediamac Tests As Follows: ------------------- 99 Seconds - (Integer) 3.180652e+6 99 Seconds - (Double) 2.352851e+6
Mediamac is my Beige G3 Desktop 233MHz running Mac OS 9.2.2. The log says that in a 99 second test, mediamac achieved 3,180,652 calculations per second on integer calculations and 2,352,851 calculations per second on decimal (FPU) tests. It works the same way on Windows. To compile, I used REALBasic Pro with Windows (and XP) Support.
