These were all good ideas. Unfortunately, the 8 GB now gives the Sad Mac
on the 638, no matter how it is formatted. And the CD drive is SCSI, so
I couldn't borrow it's connector to attach one of the hard drives. I've
given up on the project for the moment and put the small drive back in.
Thanks for your help, tho!

Hi Laura.

You got me on the cd drive. :) Should have known better.
Its frustrating when the info is bad.

Did you try a disk tools boot disk from Gamba's site?
The fact that the drive can be "seen" when its formated as hfs+ suggests to me that the OS your running can access 8gb and more as one partition, at this point formatting after booting from a floppy should have worked. As you have passed this point I would suggest you remove all the partitions using Drive Setup on the G3 and then try booting from a floppy with the larger drive (either) installed on the 638.

My thinking is that the driver installed on the harddrive by the G3 is making life hard when you try to use it on the 638.

I hope that either Scott or Clark chime in here as I have only ppc experience when wiping "all" partitions with IDE macs, 68k scsi is no trouble for flavors of nix.
This should make the drives appear as new to the mac and will hopefully allow you to use hd setup from another boot device, floppy or cd?

Good luck
