I'm not remembering the source, but I recall long ago hearing some
comments on this list that there is a 2 gig limit for hard drive size
OR partition size.

It seems to me that it was a limit based on using Apple software
to partition a drive on the 68 k processor machines ....I 'think'
before system 8.1

I seem to recall that if you get away from the Apple software and /
or get up to 8.1 that might relieve that issue and perhaps allow you
to make larger partitions or use larger drives. YMMV.
