Could anyone tell me if a Quad 950 would go totally dead when the batery dies.

I have certainly seen this phenomenon on other early Macs, like some LC II or III models. In those cases, I could also still hear the hard drive spinning up, but the monitor would stay absolutely black and could easily cause one to think that the computer was dead. I think this is because the PRAM battery also holds the Monitor Settings from the Monitors Control Panel and, if they go, the computer doesn't know how many colours to show and it just gives up.

I am pretty sure you can find the appropriate battery for your Quadra at any Radio Shack store, although there may be cheaper places to buy one if you have the time and patience to shop around.

Good luck!!
