Okay. I dismantled the 840, popped out all the RAM memory and cleaned
the tin contacts with alcohol; did the same for the VRAM, and replaced
the PRAM battery. Checked and double checked all connections on the mobo
and HDD while I was in there.
On startup, I initially got the "sad Mac" "auto-crash" sound instead of
the Mac chime, but on the second try, it booted up normally. I've now
had it running for about half an hour and have restarted several times
with no problem. Can anyone explain why the first attempt to boot
resulted in the "sad Mac" sound following all my dismantling? As long as
it was only the one time, I guess I'm out of the woods on this strange
boot behavior. Time will tell. Thanks everyone!
Bill
