If you want to keep the built-in things you'd have to 
otherwise add to 7.1, keep what you have but get the 
7.6.1 update. Yeah, 8 is great too. 

A new OS will work about as well as a clean install of 
what you have, however. It'll fix things perhaps but not 
because anything's all that wrong with 7.6 per se.

In other words, changing to another version of the OS 
doesn't address the issue unless you have some 
specific app or extension or whatnot that isn't happy 
running under 7.6.

Gonna bet* you have some garden-variety file or disk 
corruption, or an app with weak memory management 
causing it to starve itself and/or the OS, resulting in a 
crash. It would happen sooner or later to whatever you 
switch to anyway.
