The special A/UX boot floppy contains a special hacked version of Apple CD 
ROM  which will recognize *any* external drive, even ones not having an Apple 
ROM. The support provided by CD ROM Hack is for mounting CDs as data disks on 
the desktop only, not for any other purpose.

In fact, it is a good emergency CD ROM driver for laptops and other Macs not 
having CD ROMs, for which you want to do a system install from a universal 
install CD.

That's how I bootstrapped several MacOS versions to my PB540cs and Q950s 
while using a generic external CD ROM drive (Sony CDU-541).
