Oh, man...

Had a set of macs I gave to a number of people who were just loloking for
simple web browsing, typing, etc. duties...what one person does to theirs
is frightening...

They turned on all extensions. They keyboard no longer works in this way -
just clicks. So I made a WORKING set of extensions (running 7.5.5) and
copied it - naming them "DO NT TOUCH" and the like...

Well, that worked. Then they had copies of *everything* they could ge hold
of all over the drive. Not a bunch of programs installed, but "copy of ocpy
of copy of copy of extensions (disabled)" and the like.

Cleaned the drive off again. Locked the system folder. (You know, "Protect
system folder" in the applications menu.)

A week later, "This doesn't boot, I need a bootup disk." Huh? What did she
do now... She can't tell me ("I didn't do anything," which to someone who
has done tech support for years means either (a) I don't want to tell you
or (b) "you mean deleting that file counts as doing something?") I go up to
take a look - yep, boots, gets a nice flashing quesiton mark.

Grr.... somehow she unlocked and/or deleted the system folder. So, pull out
the install floppies.... "Can't install, the system folder is locked."

First question - *any* idea what she's possibly done? I could use some
hints here...

Continuing - got a working 7.5 Network Access disk. She got hold of it
despite me telling her to wait so I can get up and work on it.... I finally
get up there a day later, with great trepidation...

"The monitor does'n't work." Eh? This is the same one she said "didn't
work" before... took it home, ran it perfectly fine for hours. Network
access disk is in the drive - oh well - boot, comes up, window upon window
flashes onto the screen (including, as I feared, "System folder") then the
monitor (applecolor high res RGB) turns off. And WON'T come back on.

I think I remember now why I don't work in tech support any more. Someone
send me an advil - I have the monitor, am reasonably sure it'll work at
home (though she was jerking the power cord around) - and her multiple
outlet setup there is an electrical nightmare...

Anyway, I'll fiddle with the monitor and make sure it works, but does
anyone have any ideas on what she may have done to "lose" the system,
though the folder is locked? And can I *un*lock it with the Network Access
Disk?

TIA,
Eric
