I also find 8.1 a little clunky on my 840av. I only use it for HFS+, I'm
going back to 7.6.1 when I get my PM 7300 as it will get a pair of 500MB
Quantum drive or maybe one and a 4GB IBM or something instead of the
mammoth 40GB ATA beast.
