That's something Apple has never defined. First generation would
definitely include the x100 models. I suspect we could call the x200
series (not the 7200) second generation, since they came out later and
were 603-based.

I suppose we'd then call the first generation of PCI models the third
generation of Power Macs -- the x500 models. The x600 models weren't much
different, mostly slight case changes and faster daughter cards.

Then there's the issue of the 6360 and later, which were PCI but also
shared some of the x200 architecture. Still, they existed concurrently
with the x500 models, so maybe we're best off calling them third gen.

Fourth gen: beige G3

Fifth: blue & white G3, "Yikes" G4

Sixth: 100 MHz motherboard G4 models

Seventh: 133 MHz bus G4s

The numbers don't indicate anything absolute. 4x00 was one series (okay,
just one kinda doggy model), as were 6x00, 7x00, 8x00, and 9x00. 6x00
were consumer models, 7x00 typical business user, 8x00 for power users,
and 9x00 for servers is a rough guideline.

In the 7x00 series, the 7200 was better than the 7100, the 7500 than the
7200, yet the 7300 ran faster than the 7500 and 7600. Go figure.

All that said, what's the point of worrying about computer generations?
We divide our lists on a pretty simple basis:

- 1st PowerMacs -- these don't have PCI expansion slots. These were the
first Macs, but not necessarily all first generation.

- PCI PowerMacs -- these have PCI, but didn't ship with G3 processors

- G-List -- these shipped with G3 or G4 processors

This completely eliminates the need to split hairs over which Mac is part
of which generation. And boy is this off topic for the Quadra list. ;-)
