Because software QA and support are expensive.  If a vendor says they
support a particular configuration, and they provide support, they have to
test that configuration.  Many vendors will decide that supporting aging
platforms is not economically viable.

I think it's pretty tough for the non-enthusiast to get continued good use
from an old platform.  Lots of people don't want to spend time fussing with
their computer.  I imagine most quadlist readers can't spend enough time...

It is nice that not all software development is driven by the same business
model.  Linux is an example; there are countless others.
