If you've got 8.1 around, use that.  Lots faster when in PPC mode due to
the higher percentage of PPC-native code.  7.6.1 has virtually *no*
PPC-native code in it :(

How about hacking the Apple driver?  I assume you can't use the Apple
driver as-is...?
