Q950 (also Q900 and WGS 95) oscillators are always in a metal package with 
0.300" by 0.600" grid pin-through-hole leads. This is equivalent to a 14-pin 
DIP package.

Every Q950 oscillator I've seen has been the tall type.

Replacement with a short type oscillator often is unsuccessful.

Apparently, the short type doesn't meet the ac specifications of the 68040.
