AppleWorks can read Excel files, I believe.
That is, AppleWorks 5 can for sure, with built-in
translators. Maybe ClarisWorks 4 could too--I can't remember.

MacLinkPlus is a great program with translators for
a lot of things including Excel, but the version I have
(12) requires PPC. Not sure if earlier versions of this
would help you.

Sorry I'm not more specific, but it might be worth
checking out AppleWorks to see if it does what you need.
