It sound like your PRAM battery needs to be replaced.   When you make a
change to your settings, like in the memory control panel, and they
don't 'stick', you need to change the battery.  They are 10 bucks a
radio shack.  

Also, remember that changes made in the memory control panel do not
take effect until after a restart.
