Thanks Matthew, It seems that the PRAM battery was dead. I installed a new one and now things are working ok and the RAM disk has disappeared off the desktop.
I keep this Quadra unplugged for most of the time, unless I'm using it. Is that bad for the battery? I think I read here that the battery is kept topped up by keeping the power plugged in even though the machine may be turned off. Regarding computer addiction: I'm a Linux/Unix/PC person who found this Quadra 605 on the street! I can remember when they were new about 10 years ago and how I loved the low profile, pizza box case - much prettier than those clunky beige PCs of the time. I wanted one in the worst way. However, they were expensive (as were PCs) so it was either Mac or PC but not both. I also wanted something that I could run Unix on because I use Unix at work. That meant I needed a PC. Now, it's nice to finally have found a free Quadra. I've upgraded it to a full 68040 chip and plan to run either NetBSD or Linux on it when I can figure out how to do the installation. I'd rebuild the desktop too for good measure. Matthew A computer without Windows is like a dog without bricks tied to its head. -- Quadlist is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
