Thanks Matthew,

It seems that the PRAM battery was dead. I installed a
new one and now things are working ok and the RAM disk
has disappeared off the desktop.

I keep this Quadra unplugged for most of the time, unless
I'm using it. Is that bad for the battery? I think I read
here that the battery is kept topped up by keeping the
power plugged in even though the machine may be turned
off.

Regarding computer addiction: I'm a Linux/Unix/PC person
who found this Quadra 605 on the street! I can remember
when they were new about 10 years ago and how I loved the
low profile, pizza box case - much prettier than those
clunky beige PCs of the time. I wanted one in the worst
way. However, they were expensive (as were PCs) so it was
either Mac or PC but not both. I also wanted something
that I could run Unix on because I use Unix at work. That
meant I needed a PC. Now, it's nice to finally have found
a free Quadra. I've upgraded it to a full 68040 chip and
plan to run either NetBSD or Linux on it when I can
figure out how to do the installation.

Go to the Preferences in the System folder and throw
away the memory
preferences file, then restart the computer. I'd rebuild
the desktop too
 for good measure.
