I currently have one too many Macs. I've decided that either my Quadra 650 or my Performa 6200 must go. Here are the specs on each: Quadra 650: 44mb ram, 500mb hd, 4x cd, vram upgrade. Perfroma 6200: 48mb ram, 1.2 gb hd, 4x cd, 28.8 internal modem Both work fine. The 6200 also tells me via the Apple system profiler it has a 603e and not a 603 chip in it. It was a later 6200 so maybe that is possible. The Quadra is just as fast as the 6200 most of the time. I'm sure it would be easier for me to get rid of the 6200 the way it is set up. I'll use the one I keep mainly for word processing. Opinions? Thanks. John
I actually faced a similar situation recently. I have a Performa 6300 and a Centris 650, both similar to the machines you mention. (Your machine actually sounds more like a 6300 than a 6200. The 6300 has a 603e and a 28.8 modem. The 6200 has a 603 and a 14.4 modem. motherboard swap, perhaps?) The Q650 is a very good '040. The P6200 is a POS PowerMac. But it is still a PowerMac. There is a lot you can do with a PowerMac that you can't do with an '040. 68k software is very hard to come by these days. Plus it has an internal modem. You can add a TV tuner (with a remote control) for not that much more. The P6200 can run OS 9.1 (although slowly). The Q650 can only run OS 8.1. On the other hand, there are some things that the 650 can do that the 6200 can't. It has built in ethernet. (Although you can get a comm-slot or LC-PDS ethernet card for about the same price as an AAUI transciever on e-bay) It can hold 136MB RAM as opposed to only 64MB on the 6200. It can run linux. (The 62xx/63xx's can't because of their fouled up motherboards - except MkLinux, but that's dead) You can upgrade it to a PowerMac with a PPC upgrade card, but that will cost you. But most importantly, it doesn't suffer from the horrible design that plagued the 62xx/63xx series. Also check to see if your 6200 is defective. Some 6200's came out of the factory defective. Apple has a tester. If it is, then your decision is easy. So, it depends on what you want. I kept my 6300 because I wanted to run PPC software. (I also have the TV Tuner and an ethernet card). With 64MB RAM, OS 8.1, and virtual memory off, it's not too bad. On the other hand, the Q650 is a better made computer. But you know what you need better than I do.
