I think that whatever sounds you have in there are loaded into RAM at all times. So the more sounds in the System suitcase, the less free memory you have. I remember reading this in an older Mac book though, it might not be true anymore. One other thing, when I upgraded from 9.0.something to 9.1, I kept getting weird errors until I took the sounds out of my system folder. (There were several large custom sounds in there.)
