The main thing to me is that in-place quotation and response preserves
the chronological order of the comments.  Top posting just makes a mess,
especially after about the third top-posted reply.

I think a big clue is that almost no one who has been using things
like email lists and Usenet for >10 years does top posting. Experience
counts.
