I would not recommend sanding the unit as the stress and possible static
build up may destroy the integrity of the chip. The heat sink not covering
the whole chip would be more of a concern. I believe I read earlier on the
list that heat sinks on a PC 486/CPU is about the proper size heat sink for
a 040. If you are using thermal grease, you do not need to have clips to
hold the chip and the heat sink together. I have worked on many 486 PCs
that used only thermal grease for holding the heat sink to the CPU.
