I assume it has something to do with how the instruction set is being used in the 680X0 style of CPU chip being more stable than the instruction code in 586 CPU. I have noticed that the 486 PC is more stable running 95 than 586 and up. Guess it goes to prove that faster and newer is not necessarily better.
