Our classroom has a Performa 5260/120 (OS 7.5.3)which has been printing fine to
an Epson 600 for years. Last week while switching the printer cable (which we do
often) to another mac, the plastic guide for the pins on the printer port came
out from the back of the computer and stayed in the printer cable. We can't get
it back in, and we can't print by just sticking the cable into the metal sheaths
behind the plastic pin guide (which are now exposed on the back of the computer)

Since there is a modem port, and the chooser offers the choice of printing from
the printer or modem port, I thought our problem would be solved by selecting
the modem port in the chooser. However, after selecting the modem port and
trying to print, we get a dialogue box saying the printer is not responding,
check connections blah blah blah.

There is nothing wrong with the printer or the cable (we still print from the
other computer). I reinstalled the original system files on the Performato make
sure nothing had accidentally been removed that was necessary.

Any ideas why we can't print from the modem port? Is it all a cruel facade that
can't be done on these machines, even though the chooser gives you choice of
port? Say it ain't so, Steve!
