I edit video on my Quadra 800 as well. However MacOS 8.1 is not only not really necessary, but probably not the best choice.
I've installed so man versions of the OS on my Quadra and after testing them all over and over again with both Speedometer and just general use, I find that system 7.5.5 is the fastest overall. 8.1 seems to have slightly slower disk access times over and over again, and besides that it just "feels" slow. Director 3 is great, just be aware its complex! >I am planning on running OS 8.1 and using Director 3.1 on a Q840AV to get my >feet wet.
