Thanks to everyone for their advice about the above. It was just a matter of applying more force in a confident manner... out it came. The Performa 630 now has a 24x Apple unit, boots off CD fine... can read lots of newfangled CDs now that before just locked the machine in an endless whirring and spinning... The drive judders the computer's chassis a bit when it's spinning at full speed, probably I cld adjust its screws and position slightly to make it spin more sweetly...
