Hello:

Funny you should bring this problem up as I just replaced the battery in
one of my Performa 631VCDs today. I am a vintage computer collector
(mostly Apple and Commodore) and am always looking for ways to make life
easier and save money. With about 50 computers in my collection this has
become a necessity. The 4.5 volt battery you need can be found, but
because it is becoming more scarce everyday, its price keeps increasing.
The price is around $10 now. While "Rat Shack" sometimes has them in
stock, more than likely you will end up ordering it, and that takes time.
They are available on "Gyp Way" but the problem there is that you have no
way of knowing how fresh they are. I have bought batteries off of eBay
only to have them go dead after a couple of months. My solution to the
problem of getting the batteries inexpensively, fresh, quickly, and
easily was to go to Radio Shack and buy three, double A battery holders
with leads. They are 99 cents each. Radio Shack used to have a 3, double
A battery holder, but it is no longer listed in their catalog. If you
connect the positive lead of one holder to the negative lead of another
holder, and then the positive lead of that holder to the negative lead of
the next holder, the resulting voltage will be the 4.5 volts that you
need. If you have a soldering iron available it would be best to solder
all connections. Because the battery holders are made out of polyethylene
you cannot glue them together, but you can tape them. I used package
sealing tape on mine. If you cut the connector and leads off the dead
battery you can connect them to the remaining positive and negative leads
from your battery holder. Be sure and cut the leads as close to the dead
battery as possible so that you have extra long leads to place your new
battery holder wherever you want to. You can buy, fresh dated, alkaline,
double A batteries just about anywhere, very inexpensively. Hope this tip
helps.
