As I recall, in the end MSDOS just ended up being the DOS that they shipped on the install disks for all the versions of windows (up until they dropped it). It makes sense because MS didnt have to pay anything to license it from another company. Other DOS versions would work just fine, I recall coming in contact with IBM's that ran PC-DOS under windows simply because it was IBM's product and they thought it would do a better job (and didnt have to pay license fees).
