On top of the suggestions made so far, I seem to recall that 8.1 would 
only run on HFS+ formatted hard drives - remember the stuff about 
"Where have all my files gone?"

Are you sure you haven't ended up with an HFS+  formatted drive? Looks 
like OS 7.6.1 would be your best bet from where I'm sitting.

Hi all.

I have a Performa 636 who's hard disk failed (finally).  It had OS

it.  I replaced it with the smallest IDE drive I had - a 13 GB Quantum
Fireball, but OS 7.5.x wouldn't initialize the drive successfully.

I'm not remembering the source, but I recall long ago hearing some
comments on this list that there is a 2 gig limit for hard drive size
OR partition size.
It seems to me that it was a limit based on using Apple software
to partition a drive on the 68 k processor machines ....I 'think'
before system 8.1
I seem to recall that if you get away from the Apple software and /
or get up to 8.1 that might relieve that issue and perhaps allow you
to make larger partitions or use larger drives. YMMV.
