Try booting from CD by holding [Shift, Option, Command and Delete] keys held down at same time as computer starts up with CD in drive, this should force booting from the CD [or any external drive with a suitable OS] and by-passes the startup hard drive. I have a Mac OS 8.0 and a 8.1 CD, on both the code numbers begin with the letter Z tho' they both follow the same xxxxx-xxxA scheme.
